"Bacchus, you and I have been together for so long now. I can't tell you how much it means to me to have gone on this journey together. Since the day we first met, I knew that we were underdogs. But it was okay, because we were underdogs together. And now here we are, at the Pokemon League."
I continued to pet his forehead.
"Bacchus, you're my oldest friend and I've been able to rely on you over and over again throughout our adventure. I trust you more than my own father. That's why I want you to take the lead in this next battle. I know you'll do me proud."
"Saur!" he eagerly responded.
"Alright. Let's do this."
And together we walked into the next room.
"I am Bruno of the Elite Four!" declared my admittedly hunky opponent. "Through rigorous training, people and Pokemon can become stronger without limit."
Like really hunky.
"I've lived and trained with my fighting Pokemon. And that will never change!"
He was like a young Chuck Norris with less modesty.
I snapped out of my trance. "Uh, yes sir?"
"We will grind you down with our superior power!"
"Oh, uh, okay."
And the fight began. Bacchus stomped from my side onto the battlefield to face Bruno's Onix. Bacchus knocked it out with a single critical Razor Leaf. Next came Bruno's Hitmonchan. Now it was time to go on the defensive. I ordered Bacchus to lay a Leech Seed and Toxic on it, and together we waited it out while his Hitmonchan slowly had its health drained away.
Bruno's Hitmonlee befell the same fate. Next up was another Onix. It managed to hit Bacchus with a powerful Earthquake, but my Venusaur took it in stride and retaliated with a Razor Leaf that knocked it out. Finally, Bruno sent out Machamp, his strongest Pokemon. Bacchus hit it with a Leech Seed right away, but I knew that I couldn't risk using Toxic and triggering Machamp's Guts.
Bruno must have known that my plan was to wait this fight out, because he began ordering his Machamp to use Bulk Up, which raised its attack and defense stats. He wanted to take out my Venusaur in one shot. I switched to a less conservative strategy, alternating between using Protect and Razor Leaf each turn. My strategy paid off and Bruno's Machamp was finished before it could manage to sneak a blow past Protect.
"Why? How could I lose?" stammered Bruno after the loss.
I hopped on top of Bacchus's back and gave him a massive Ursaring hug.
"That's my boy, Bacchus! I knew I could trust you!"
"Saur!" he replied joyously.
"My job is done," Bruno said solemnly. "Go face your next challenge."
I climbed off of Bacchus' back and tipped my hat to Bruno.
"With pleasure," I grinned, trying to make turn the words into my temporary catch-phrase.
