FireRed Jacklocke Part 23

My first impression of Cinnabar Gym was less than stellar.

“Pokemon Quiz! Get it right, and the door opens to the next room. Get it wrong, and face a trainer! If you want to conserve your Pokemon for the Gym Leader…Then get it right!”

“Couldn’t I just go back to the Pokemon Center if my Pokemon get hurt?” I asked.

“Here we go!”

“Okay…”

“Caterpie evolves into Metapod?”

“True.”

“Bzzzt. Wrong. The correct answer was ‘yes’.”

“Oh, come on.”

“Pokemon Quiz! Get it right, and the door opens to the next room. Get it wrong, and face a trainer! If you want to conserve your Pokemon for the Gym Leader…Then get it right!”

“I literally just went back to the Pokemon Center, got healed, and then came back here.”

“Here we go!”

I sighed audibly.

“There are nine certified Pokemon League Badges?”

“As of generation six, there are fifty.”

“Bzzzt. Wrong. The correct answer was ‘no’.”

I sighed again.

“Pokemon Quiz! Get it right, and the door opens to the next room. Get it wrong, and face a trainer! If you want to conserve your Pokemon for the Gym Leader…Then get it right!”

“Do we have to go over this every time?”

“Here we go!”

“Whatever.”

“Poliwag evolves three times?”

“False. Wait, crap.”

“Bzzt. Wrong. The correct answer was ‘no’.”

“Pokemon Quiz! Get it-”

“Yes, I get it, let’s move on here!”

“Bzzt. Wrong. The correct answer was ‘no’.”

“I hate you.”

“Pokemon Quiz! Get it right, and the door opens to the next room. Get it wrong, and face a trainer! If you want to conserve your Pokemon for the Gym Leader…Then get it right!”

I kept my mouth shut, patiently waiting for the machine to finish its question.

“Here we go!”

“Pokemon of the same kind and level are not identical?”

I slowly and deliberately enunciated the word “yes”.

“You’re absolutely correct!”

“Whoopde-fricken-doo.”

“Go on through!”

I was about to move on the next room, but I decided I’d rather just battle the trainer anyway for the experience points.

“Pokemon Quiz! Get it right, and the door opens to the next room. Get it wrong, and face a trainer! If you want to conserve your Pokemon for the Gym Leader…Then get it right!”

“I really hope you’re the last one of these.”

“Here we go! TM28 contains Tombstony?”

“No.”

“Bzzt. Wrong. The correct answer was ‘false’.”

“I’m not even surprised at this point.”

This whole ordeal took me over half an hour, but I finally forced my way into the Gym Leader’s room.

“Hah!” he shouted loudly as I entered. “I am Blaine, the red-hot leader of Cinnabar Gym.”

“I hate your gym.”

“My fierty Pokemon are all rough and ready with intense heat!”

“I hate your quiz machines too.”

“They incinerate all challengers!”

“In fact I haven’t even met you yet but I’m positive that I hate you too.”

“Hah! You better have Burn Heal!”

And at this point I remembered that I forgot to buy more Burn Heals before this fight. Crap.

Leviathan opened strong by taking out Blaine’s Growlithe and Ponyta with its Hydro Pump. His Rapidash put up more of a fight and landed a Stomp attack, but in the end it was no match for my sea monster and Blaine had to use up all of his Hyper Potions on it. And although his Arcanine was tough, without the healing from Blaine it simply could not outlast Leviathan.

“I have burned down to nothing! Not even ashes remain!”

“I think you’re exaggerating a bit here. Can I have my badge now?”

To be continued…
