Super Mario Maker Coming to 3DS

During Thursday’s Nintendo Direct, Samantha Robertson of Nintendo of America Inc. revealed that last year’s Super Mario Maker for the Wii U will see a release on the 3DS family of systems.
The 3DS version will include 100 built-in levels created by Nintendo to play with immediately. These premade levels may also have different medal challenges associated with them. The examples given by Robertson during the presentation were “collecting every coin” and “defeating every enemy”.

The 3DS version can also be used to play courses made using the Wii U’s version, however Robertson stated that not all courses made on the Wii U version would be playable on the 3DS. She used the word “compatible” when saying this, which may imply that the 3DS may not be able to play those levels due to hardware limitations.

True to its name, Super Mario Maker for the 3DS will allow players to create their own Mario levels and it “includes every tool and course part in [the Wii U] version” except for the mystery mushroom and its Mario costumes.

There does, however, appear to be some changes to how player-created levels will be shared with others. Rather than uploading courses online, courses are shared via Streetpass and local wireless. Though not being able to upload courses online does seem like a bit of a step backwards, the 3DS version will add the ability for multiple players to collaborate on a single course.

Finally, the video set the release date for Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS at December 2, 2016, only three months after this reveal.
