Nintendo Unveils Surprises for Zelda's 30th Anniversary

Nintendo of America Inc.’s President, Reggie Fils-Aime unveiled some of Nintendo’s plans for The Legend of Zelda’s 30th anniversary during Thursday’s Nintendo Direct.
In addition to the original The Legend of Zelda’s availability on the previously announced NES Classic Edition, Nintendo will also be releasing four new Zelda Amiibo figures December 2, 2016. The four new figures, which can be viewed here, are an 8-Bit version of Link meant to resemble his likeness from the NES game, Ocarina of Time Link, Wind Waker Link, and Wind Waker Zelda. The new Wind Waker Link and Wind Waker Zelda will be sold together as a bundle. NoA’s president also stated that these four Amiibo figures will have “special functionality” in the upcoming The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild.

Nintendo has also paired up with Dark Horse Comics to create three upcoming books focusing on The Legend of Zelda. Fils-Aime only went into detail on the first of these books, titled The Legend of Zelda Art & Artifacts. Art & Artifacts will contain over 2000 illustrations from the series’ history. Amazon’s preorder page for the book says that it contains “over four hundred pages of fully realized illustrations from the entire thirty-year history of The Legend of Zelda™ including artwork from the upcoming The Legend of Zelda™: Breath of the Wild!” It is currently priced at $23.99 with a projected release date of February 21, 2017.

Lastly, Reggie announced The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword would be released that same day on the Wii U’s eShop. The Wii version of Skyward Sword currently holds a metascore of 93 on review-aggregator and is presently priced at $19.99 on the eShop.

Later during the Nintendo Direct, the company unveiled a trailer for the now-available 3rd DLC pack for Hyrule Warriors Legends. The first character in the pack is Toon Link from The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. This version of Link appears to be using the sand wand item to move around blocks of sand to attack. He is also seen opening up a portal through which a train barrels out of to mow down enemies. The other new character is Toon Zelda, who is shown inspiriting the body of a Darknut to unleash powerful sword attacks in addition to Toon Zelda’s magical attacks. The DLC pack also includes a new Adventure Mode map.
