If you’ve been wondering where the heck all of the Mario sports games have been these past few years (we can just pretend that Ultra Smash never happened) you might be relieved to find out that Nintendo has been busy shoving five of them into a single box for you.
During Thursday’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo of America’s Bill Trinen showed off the new title Mario Sports Superstars, a collection of five different sports featuring Mario and company. The included sports are soccer, baseball, tennis, golf, and, interestingly enough, horse-racing. Trinen described the assembly as “full-scale sports” and stated that there’s “more to them than you may expect”. The video also elaborated that the soccer mode was full 11 vs 11 rules. The game is stated to feature single player tournament for each sport as well as local and online multiplayer.
Though Trinen did say that each sport had more to it than one might expect, the footage shown certainly didn’t have anything as absurdly chaotic as Mario Strikers Charged. On the bright side, there did appear to be a sizeable pool of Mario characters to choose from. Character’s shown in the footage included Mario (duh), Peach, Waluigi, Birdo, Roy, several Toads, several Koopa Troopas, Daisy, Bowser, Diddy Kong, Wario, Boo, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Bowser Jr, Rosalina, Baby Luigi, Luigi, and several of what appear to be the Clubbas from the Paper Mario series, Parakoopa, a Hammer Bro, and some Shy Guys.
The video slated a release date of Spring 2017.
